Hillbrow Primary School began in the home of Mr and Mrs Theo Strachan before being established as Grassy Park below St Elizabeth Hospital. In 1936, after brothers Mr Percy Qhobosha Bauer and Mr Oliver Nobhongwana Bauer secured the site from the Village Management Board and Mr Percy Qhobosha Bauer personally paid for the Title Deeds, the school was built on the brow of the hill by the community under its first Principal, Mr Tennyson Ronald Mac Kay. Today, celebrating its 90th anniversary on 26 November 2026, it is a public, no-fee primary school at 159 Main Street, Lusikisiki, serving Grades R to 7 under Principal Mr T Wopula and Deputy Principal Mrs L.B. Mbioza.

The school started in the home of Mr and Mrs Theo Strachan. A schoolhouse was subsequently built below the present St Elizabeth Hospital. In order for a school to be recognised by the government in those days, legislation required it to be registered under an established church. When this intergovernmental agreement was not honoured by the Transkei administration, dedicated community leaders rallied to safeguard the school. Hillbrow learners faced acute difficulty gaining acceptance into local high schools after completing Standard 7. Lingani, Mr C.D. Mazibu, Mr E. Lawrence, Ms T. Mzoboshe, Mrs R.J. Roskruge, and Mr S. In 2011, Mr S. Ntondini was appointed Principal of Hillbrow. Through departmental rationalisation, the large combined school was separated into two independent schools: Hillbrow Primary School and Hillbrow Secondary School, operating side-by-side with shared heritage.
